Meiji period covered lacquer box, made in Japan, late 19th to very early 20th century. Measures 16 1/2 ''L x 12 3/4''w x 6 1/4''h. Dark brown/black ground on which are beautifully detailed figures and birds in a stylised Japanese landscape, with bonzai like bent pine trees, foliage and wavy clouds. Very fine detail - see needles of the tres, gnarled trunk and hair of people. The people depicted are a man and woman wearing traditional Japanese clothes and each holding a broom. Marvellous facial expressions. The woman''s kimono and the eye of a crane flying past the large tree, are the only red colour in the whole scene, which shows amazing artistic restraint. The inside of the box has a faux-tortoiseshell laquered finish. No real tortoiseshell is contained in this item. Generally very good condition with very minor wear on rim and slight scratching underneath.
