Rich layers of tsugaru lacquer have been applied to this 'suzuri bako' letter box. The ink stone was kept inside and the 'fude' writing brushes. This style of suzuri bako is extremely rare. Most are black or gold lacquered. Tsugaru lacquers were applied with a spatula to create an art deco effect. The lid is ever so slightly warped and hardly noticable. c.1930. (9½" x 7½ x 2") (24cm x 19cm x 5cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $50.
