A spectacular antique Chinese export, late 18th century - early 19th century, Jesuit Cross, made of rosewood and inlaid with finely engraved mother-of-pearl, with Jesuit order sacred religious symbols.
The center with Eucharistic Chalice, with the host radiating light, and a dove, contained in a crown of thorns above, and the Immaculate Heart of Holy Mary pierced by swords, and the Arma Christi (the Instruments of the Passion) below, adorned with peonies and floral scrolling and a Chinese vase on the bottom.
During the 18th century China exported to Europe luxury objects such as porcelain, lacquer, silk, silver, furniture, and other artwork for European aristocrats and the upper-class.
CONDITION: In good condition and shape considering its age, with signs of age and usage, absence of some tiny pieces of mother–of –pearl inlay.
MEASUREMENTS: Height: 51 cm (20 1/8 in). Width: 25.4 cm (10 in).
