Thick antique Japanese 'aka' or red bronze which dates this piece to late Edo Period when red bronze was predominant. Wonderful raised gourd handle attachments anchor the bronze handle. Gourds were considered lucky charms in traditional Japan. The bronze lid is a dragon floating in buddhist clouds. All around the base in thick raised relief are maple leaves and two mythical treasure birds. Absolutely fantastic. c.1860. (9½" x 7" x 6½") (24cm x 18cm x 16cm).
