An antique elephant tusk ivory box, with the scrimshaw portrait of a sage. Signed by the artist. This delightful little box bears the signs of having been highly valued by a former Japanese owner, as evidenced by the gold highlighted repairs. Japanese aesthetic suggests that one does not attempt to hide a repair since if a piece is valued highly enough to merit a repair it should be reflected in gold highlight. Aside from the noted repair, in otherwise good condition. Age has supplied a pleasant honey color and the scrimshaw color is slightly faded. Late 19th To early 20th C. Size: 2.5" in diameter.
