From the late Edo c.1865 this is the best antique Japanese 'tsuno' face washing basin Kodo Arts has ever seen. Used in Kyoto by a Gion District geisha, the thickly black lacquered wood basin has maki-e gold swirling rivers and flowers on its banks throughout. The handles are exceptional, covered with floral copper fittings, the first of this kind Kodo Arts has ever come across. Usually they are just lacquered. Fabulous. c.1865. (13½" x 6½") (34cm x 17cm).
