Dating from the late Meiji Period c.1890 this antique Japanese tray with its original paulownia wood box, is an auspicious tray for celebrations. Beautifully lacquered in elegant black, the tray is decorated with treasure symbols for good luck. In the center, in maki-e raised gold is the flaming jewel 'hoju' in Japanese. This is the wish granting sacred gem. A symbol of purity and the void, it represents the promise of being released from all desire.
