Antique Japanese Meiji Period c.1885 very large gosho doll. The size to begin with is very unusual and makes this doll the perfect decorative item on a chest or mantle. Featuring the sambosa new year's hat which most gosho dolls wore to perform the ritual new year's dance. The gosho ningyo or doll was so named as a souvenir for visitors to the ancient capital of Kyoto. This doll has a green midriff with a turtle symbol diaper and a maroon lower with wisteria leaves. Quite a bit of age wear but has excellent patina. c.1885. (12" x 12" x 10") (30cm x 30cm x 26cm).
