Playful 'ittobori' one knife Hotei carved out of japanese cypress. Hotei is one of the seven lucky gods of Japan and is the most jolly and happy. Usually holds a treasure bag but in this sculpture holds the sacred wishing gem. Meiji Period c. 1900. Some of the original paint has worn off to become patina. Fabulous facial expression.
