In the original box, this beautiful maroon lacquered antique Japanese sweets box is signed on the bottom: 'Ansei 7' or 1860. Also written is 'saru nigatsu' meaning the year of the monkey, february. Also, 'hatsu zeku' meaning the first Boy's Day celebration. It was obviously made to order to celebrate this occassion. Geometrical designs adorn in gold lacquer. The box it comes in is also signed by the maker, Motoyama Genuemon. A slight nick on the top but hardly noticable. c.1860. (8" x 8" x 5") (20cm x 20cm x 13cm). Ask for shiiping quote.
