This is a rare ink stone signed on the back, "Choshu Akamagaseki" by "Suzuki Shikan". Choshu Han was the Edo Period feudal name for what is now Shimonoseki City at the southern tip of the main island of Japan, Honshu. Akamagaseki suzuri ink stones were prized ink stones from this region, being recognized throughout the country and usualy presented as gifts between daimyo lords and the shogun.
