Cary was an artist and illustrator for the leading periodicals of his time (Harper's, Scribber's and Leslie's) who made many trips out west even riding with Custer (even just a few days before the famous battle at Little Big Horn) and eventually befriending Sitting Bull. His works are presently displayed at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Gilcrease Museum, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Center.
