Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was one of the great poster artists, creating over 1,000 posters during his career. His idea was that a poster should stand out in opposition to its surroundings in order to surprise and arrest the viewer. His use of a single, identifiable figure is seen in this cognac poster.
