The plot is patterned after the film Twelve O''Clock High, which producer- screenwriter Sy Bartlett also wrote, with elements also mirroring Above and Beyond, a film written by his collaborator, Beirne Lay, Jr.. Rock Hudson plays a United States Air Force Colonel, Jim Caldwell, as a Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52 wing commander. He must shape up his men to pass a grueling operational readiness inspection (ORI) that the previous commander had failed and for which he had been relieved of his command. Caldwell is also recently married to an English wife, and as a tough commanding officer doing whatever he has to do to shape up his command, his wife sees a side to him that she hadn''t seen before. The film also stars Rod Taylor, Mary Peach, Barry Sullivan, Kevin McCarthy, Henry Silva, Robert Lansing, Leif Erickson, and Richard Anderson. General Curtis LeMay USAF (former head of the Strategic Air Command and serving at the time as Air Force Chief of Staff) used his considerable influence to allow Producer Sy Bartlett and Director Delbert Mann unprecedented access to various SAC facilities, in the belief that this film would play a vital role in reminding Americans that the Air Force did indeed have its weapons of mass destruction under tight control in sharp contrast to the impressions that the movies Dr. Strangelove and Fail-Safe (both based on novels written prior to 1963 whose premise was that accidental nuclear war caused by SAC was not only possible but likely) would give. Mann, who had won an Academy Award for his first film (Marty), was eager to demonstrate that he could direct serious material, and not merely light-hearted comedies which had not been as nearly well-received. The history of every country can clearly be seen through its posters. Nowhere is this truer than in the case of China - a vast country with a rich and diverse history of poster art. Perhaps this was because posters presented an effective and colorful means of communicating messages to a broad multi-lingual population, or perhaps it was because, as always, posters could convey in images what politicians could only hint at in speeches -- whatever the reasons, Chinese propaganda poster art is a niche market in and of itself. After the Founding of the People''s Republic of China in 1949, and throughout the 1950''s and 60''s - particularly during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution - Chinese poster artists were very active in terms of quantity and inventiveness. There are a huge variety of styles in the posters - some harsh, some naturalistic, some with the so- called ''sweet icing'' to give the people a more idealized look and to convey a more positive cheerful outlook... In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. I''m told that this poster shows some of the influence of Soviet- style poster art, and I do see it... compared to the other Chinese posters I have, it is more stylized and less ''sweet icing'' ... produced by an anonymous artist and dated May 14, 15, 21, 22, 25, 29, 30 (probably in 1938) and advertising a horse race at the public Hippodrome at Harbin the poster measures 24 x 36, and is linen lined.. (Of course I love it, it has a horse...) It is in overall very good condition, although there seems to be some sort of pin prick line through lettering on top - it is visible in the photo. This poster comes from the private collection of a noted author, collector and lecturer who has travelled widely in China and around the world. His poster collection is massive, and his knowledge quite legendary. He recently put together an exhibition of Chinese posters which was shown in national museums in Canada and France (this poster was part of that exhibition) and we are pleased and proud to have been asked to sell his posters.We are happy to ship worldwide. By design, travel posters must express, in clear, concise and easily understandable graphic language, who the carrier is, where there destinations are, how they get there, and why you would want to use them. Whether we are talking about the great posters of the French (or Swiss, or Italian) railways from the early 1900''s, or the early Canadian Pacific Railway (or airline) posters, or mid-century airline travel posters or shipping posters - like this one for the American Export Lines - the posters had to grab your attention, and make you want to travel. Shipping companies have always played an integral part in the discovery and exploration of new lands. I first became aware of the importance of maritime posters when a collector was kind enough to consign a collection amassed over a lifetime to me- and when he did so, he accompanied each poster with detailed notes about each boat and her travels. It was then that I realized how devoted the followers of maritime and nautical ephemera are... So, for those of you who may not know ''American Export- Isbrandtsen Lines, New York, was the leading US-flag shipping company between the US east coast and the Mediterranean from 1919 to 1977, offering both Cargo ship services and Passenger ship services, until declaring bankruptcy and was acquired by Farrell Lines, New York.'' There is something innocent and spectacular about advertising from the Art Deco period - it gets the message across so gently but yet so forcefully at the same time. I find this piece very evocative of the Gazette du Bon Ton and other fashion periodicals of the time in France - simple, elegant, but very, very Deco. Some combination of fashion and environment so that the viewer is always reminded that fashion and life does not take place in a vacuum ... An unusual combination of colors designed to catch the eye of a consumer as they were shopping, this was a point of sale piece which hung from the rafters of a store ... It is impressive and colorful and in A condition - some aging is noted at the borders but the image is clear and intact. Probably produced in the 1930s, it is being sold for $125. A lovely and colorful period advertisement for a drink which was advertised as the best lemonade made from pure fruit and pure sugar (as opposed to what we wonder?) Evidently Les Etablisements Rivayrol also made wines, beers, oils and liqueurs, but in this advertisement it is La Mousseuse (the ''foamy'') that they are advertising. We love the man - very much in the style of Leon Dupin who was working around this time, but as it is an unsigned work, we guess it is more of an homage than a work of the master. This carton measures 9.5 x 12 and is printed on cardboard. It is in very good condition considering it''s age - a few scuffs indicate that it is close to 100 years old, but then again, I think that when you and I reach that age we will have a few signs of wear and tear as well.
