Harrison Bird Brown(attrb.), American, 1831-1915, oil on canvas, "Rain Squall", 12 x 20 inches, partial signature and title on reverse. Born in Portland, Maine as Henry Box Brown, he began his artistic career as a sign and banner painter. After changing his name, he focused exclusively on producing fine art. His subjects were the rugged coasts of his home state. Brown was a member of the Portland Art Society and was elected president in 1892, shortly before he relocated to London, where he died in 1915.
