Landscape painting, most probably of the Mass. shore by William Lester Stevens (American, 1888-1969), oil on artist board. Signed lower right. Circa 1920s-30s. Size: 15.75" x 19.25". Offered in a modern frame. Stevens was a Rockport artist and one of the founders of the Rockport Art Association. This post-Impressionist painting utilizes a thick impasto to its surface treatment. Stevens studied at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. Later, he began teaching at Rockport, then at Boston University and Princeton. He was a member of the National Academy and American Watercolor Society, and was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes.
