"ITALIAN COASTAL ROADSIDE ENCOUNTER" by Thomas Leeson Rowbotham a listed British artist (1823-1875). This is a 8" X 19" Watercolor/Gouache signed lower right, dated 1874, and titled on verso, 13" X 24" Framed. Rowbotham, a landscaper painter in watercolors, was also known for his work as a lithographer and engraver. He suceeded his father as Professor of Drawing at the Royal Naval School, New Cross. His first serious work was done in 1840. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy,New Watercolor Society, Society of British Artists, and others from 1840 until his death in 1875. He wrote and illustrated many books. He had never been to Italy but during the later part of his life he restricted his work to Italian scenes of seas and lakes with the sunny effects that he preferred to paint. This watercolor is a Excellent Example of the type of Italian landscape he painted in the later years of his life. This is a wonderful watercolor of people in and around a cart off of a countryside hilly road overlooking the water and castles on the water surrounded by a beautiful and serene landscape of trees and bushes.
