s a n f o r d f i s h e r b. 1927, gordon's reserve, saskatchewan d. c.1988 first nations affiliation: plains cree. the size of this work is 16"x20" representational oil painter sanford fisher was educated at the anglican boarding school on his home reserve. his portraits and scenes are marked by a distinctive use of colour and a sureness of technique which placed him among the most distinguished cree painters of his generation. this achievement is all the more remarkable considering that a train accident in 1972 forced the amputation of Fisher's left painting hand, burdening the artist with the arduous challenge of relearning his famed technique with his right hand.
