A superb period piece of fine art! This gorgeous oil on canvas painting is by American Impressionist artist, George Henry Bogert (1864-1944), born in New York City. He became known for landscapes, seascapes of Venice and urban subjects, and is especially aligned with the style of Tonalism and the Barbizon School of painting. In his signature work, he used "cool blue tones to achieve blurred form and soft half-light effects, further accentuated by the application of dense impasto." Much of this work seemed related to the popular turn-of-the-century soft. An impressionistic/tonalist Venice, Canal Scene at night. Signed George H. Bogert lower left. Trimmed in a nicely carved gilt wood frame. Two paintings by George Henry Bogert are owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and many others in museums. Truly worthy of any collection or design. In exquisite antique condition, from around the mid to end of the 19th Century. Frame is 50.5W X 39H X 3d, canvas is 40H X 28.5W. Serious inquiries welcome!
