Depicts the British and North American (Cunard Line) steamship Britannia leaving East Boston, Massachusetts, on February 3, 1844, on a voyage to Liverpool. A group of Boston merchants paid for a channel 7 miles long and 100 ft. wide to be cut through the ice after the ship had become icebound in Boston Harbor.
