John Liston Byam Shaw 1872 1919 A birds heart broken 1907 signed dated published important drawing, framed with glass ~ 8.2 x 10 inches ~ during the same year the artist made this artwork he also made 'The caged bird' depicting one of his pupils Maud Tindal Atkinson; here depicted the same artist... the art was used for a book of poems by the sister of Maud, Ethel Atkinson; One can sense the affection the artist had for his favourite pupil, even more so with the sexual reference of the caged bird (meaning women with virginity intact, as apposed to the bird which flew away, where the virginity was lost) very likely the affection the artist felt remained platonic ~ this depicting of the hart broken might indicate an actual rift between John & Maud... it is also highly likely that the man in the picture is a self-portrait of the artist...
