Pair of early 18th century French miniature portrait paintings on vellum. Portraits depict a man and a woman respectively. The full bearded man looks inwards, as though deep in thought. He wears a simple blue robe and has long curly hair and and greying beard. The woman has a beautiful, if heroic face. Silky blond hair is pulled back and plaited into a bun behind her head. She also looks away from the viewer as though emotionally absorbed in matters elsewhere. She wears a lighter blue scarf over a pink/tan top - low cut with a frilly edge to her bodice. Both are beautiful people caught up in intensely emotional moments, oblivious to the viewer. The quality of the draftmanship is superb. Minute detail, superbly depicted. Old Master quality painting. Although these are very old, both paintings and frames are in excellent condition. Wooden frames are just under 3inches in diam. Frame has gadrooned outer and inner borders and uper surface is gilded, while outside rim is covered in vellum.
