One of a large collection of French and American handpainted miniatures, most on ivory. This one, done on paper, applied to wood, is probably French, dating to the 18th century.Measurement of miniature is 3inches high. Frame is a little over 4 1/4inches high.Beautifully executed painting in bad shape. It has been attached to a piece of wood and the paper has buckled and has losses on the sides. Still, we can clearly see the high quality of the painting and the beautiful aristocratic woman in her powdered wig and layer upon layer of lacy clothing. Old frame of ebonised wood is probably not original to the piece and the painting was attached with a piece of tape at the back, showing only the ''good'' part of the work.
