The portrait is signed on the back in script with black paint,"Mr. George Schofield AE.24.1854." It is also signed, "E. A. Greenwood. Pntr." Next to the painters signature is a small sketch of a young man. The portrait is of a middle-aged gentleman sitting next to a table covered with a red cloth with a black scrolled design. His left arm, with open hand, rests on the table. His right fit rests on his hip. He wears a black cloak, white shirt with three small white buttons, a large black bow tie, and a gold watch chain. He has red lips and dark blue eyes. He has red-brown hair, sideburns and a short beard. His hair is flat on top with a rolled curl over his ears and around the back of his head.
