Paul Valery 1871 1945 ~ portrait of his wife, Jeannie Gobillard (Madame Paul Valery) 19 x 11 inches ~ Pierre-Auguste Renoir (a close friend of Jeannie) made a famous portrait of Jeannie Valery, as well as artists Berthe Morisot, and Julie Manet ~ this however must rank as an equally significant portrait, one could argue right up there in importance with Renoir ~ Paul Valery was a polymath; many state he wrote the most significant French poem of the 20TH Century, La Jeune Parque'; but apart from writing this masterpiece he is also known for writing 261 notebooks, with reflections on science and mathematics, as well as countless illustrations and doodahs ~ the portrait on offer falls certainly not in this category; it is an accomplished piece, depicting Madame Valery on the bed; it is a large work of historical importance, for all of the reasons mentioned, a very important period piece... Provenance Drouot auction house, framed with glass; condition very good indeed
