Probably American
Probably late 18th century
This be-wigged gentleman, probably American but perhaps English, is identified on the reverse, but no further information has been found. Painted in oil on linen canvas, the work is attached to the hand-cut stretcher frame with what appear to be hand-made nails (see detail shot). The large wooden "keys" securing the stretcher lead us to believe it's American. Unframed, no discernible signature.
