Very large, American School, portrait of a young women in a winter setting. This is a bold and beautiful oil on canvas painting of a handsome young women, warmly dressed in a fur trimmed coat and muff. She is standing on the edge of a frozen pond, ice skates draped over one arm. It is not clear whether she is arriving or leaving. She is pictured in 3/4 profile, facing the artist. The backdrop is a winter wonderland of snow covered mountains and pine trees in the distance and leafless trees close to the frozen pond. Her clothing is luxurious and elegant with fur trim and a hint of lace. Under her matching plumed hat, her dark hair is done in long ringlets. It is very nicely framed in an elaborate Victorian gilt gesso frame that suits the painting perfectly. Painted by a skilled hand, this is one of the most striking paintings we have ever owned. The painting is in good condition, re-lined, with some surface cracking that does not detract from it's looks. The period gold-gilt frame appears to have old, well done, restorations and original gilding and is over-all in good condition. Artist signed in the lower right corner, I am not sure of the name.
