King Frederick the Great on the Flute
Oil on Canvas, 37.5 x 27.75
King Frederick the Great on the Flute performing with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach on the Harpsichord and Frantisek Benda on the Violin. The original work is in Berlin.
Recaptured by an artist after a painting by Adolf von Menzel (1815-1905). Menzel was a German painter and printmaker, best known in his own day as a brilliant historical painter, whose patriotic works satisfied the public’s taste, engendered by Prussia’s continual expansion throughout the 19th century, for propagandistic art. In the 20th century he was chiefly esteemed for his sensitive treatment of light and the original compositions of his small genre pictures.
In this painting, Menzel was capturing the illuminating effect of the rock crystals on the candeliers.
It is in great condition. The frame is also in good condition with the exception of scratches.
The painting appears to be signed R.V.
