Born in Romania in 1895, Harry Gottlieb became an important 20th century American artist. At the end of WW I, involved with the Provincetown Players Theatre Company of New York, he met the young platwright Eugene O'Neill and designed the sets for some of his first performances. A social realist, he was one of the premier artists to be honored with a one-man show at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, which still holds one of the best collections of Gottlieb's paintings, drawings and prints. Gottlieb was a founding member of both the W. P. A. and the Artists' League of America. This work is rendered in ink, with watercolor wash; the hand-carved frame is believed to have been made by the artist. The dimensions given below are for the framed piece; the image size is 14 1/2" x 17".
