an ojibway from magnetawan first nation, russel was born in Henvey Inlet, Ontario, at the home of his grandmother in 1956. in 1979 russel appreticed under isaac bignell from the pas, manitoba, where he first learned the sponge technique of painting, and for the next nineteen years he dedicated himself to this fofm of art. but, basically, russel is a self taught artist working with acrylic on canvas, paper, birch bark,fungus and hide, using traditional and contemporary themes.
