Powerful totemic imagery strikes our senses as we experience Szasz's painting “Africaâ€. Symbolic of the awakenings of independence are a pair of wide-open eyes, fashioned from two eggs lying in a nest beneath a protective mother bird. The nest rests atop a totemic image, its elongated bark-brown shape suggesting a tree branch from the African savanna. A closer look at the branch reveals the subtle form of a stylized nose, its bottom portion simulating nostrils that flare with emotive passion. Beneath the branch we see the evocative image of a pair of lips, their vibrant red color once again echoing the vibrations of a passionate soul in the process of becoming free. Altogether, these striking images form a face, one that is revealed only to the involved...for it is a face formed from a spirit, a spirit that springs from a continent concerned with taking the responsibility for one's own inherent right to freedom. - (ES.061) Dimensions: 29" (73.7cm) high x 19" (48.3cm) wide Collection: Contemporary Art Medium: Oil On Wood
