This style of cross was specially designed for use by Orthodox priests in blessing their congregations. The upper portion shows God the Father giving His blessings, with adoring angels prostrate at His feet; while the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove is at the center. The inscription under the arms of Jesus reads, "To Your cross we pray, Your resurrection we praise." On the left vertical panel is the weeping Mary, Mother of Christ with an attendant. The opposite panel shows St. John and a Roman soldier. Jerusalem is graphically depicted, as are the rolling sepulchral hills of Golgotha. The skull at the bottom represents not only the infamous place of execution, but also the skull of Adam. On the back are elaborate floral designs in the neo- classical style. Perhaps most impressive is the artist's use of dark blue and white enamel, which brings to mind the moment of Christ's death when the clouds darkened and lightening struck. -(PF.5255)Enameled Brass Cross - PF.5255Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 8.75" (22.2cm) high x 5.75" (14.6cm) wide
