Lares were minor Roman deities, protectors and guardians on a domestic scale. Almost every Roman house contained a shrine to these spirits at which offerings were made regularly, for they were responsible for the well being and prosperity of the family unit, travelers and the state. This splendid little Lar seems to suggest that he would still be happy to offer his benevolent protection, even in a world that no longer quite believes in his magic. - (FZ.022)
