Wealthy Romans--those whose lamps were made of bronze and not the more ordinary clay- -frequently brightened their homes with stands or trees of hanging lights, an early variant on the chandelier. This gorgeous lamp--the epitome of restrained classical elegance--surely hung on such a tree. Though the room it lit has vanished with time, we can still imagine it ablaze with color and life. - (FZ.080)
