ROMAN BRONZE WINGED NUDE EROS
Love’s messenger stands in a relaxed pose with detailed facial features. Finely modeled in a naturalistic way, with childish proportions and chubby features. The figure is in a relaxed posture with the lively movement of the twisted head and body, twin wings with wonderful incised feathers attached to his back. He was probably holding a bow and arrow, now missing.
Dated from, 100 BC – 100 AD
Eros, God of love and son of Aphrodite, was a popular subject form small or silver statuettes. Eros spread his gift of love among mortals and the gods by means of his bow and arrows. (The arrows have golden tips … that aren’t deadly as much as powerful. Supposedly they cause victims to suddenly be overcome with feelings of love.)
