Slip Painted Earthenware Vase - JB.1196, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 10 th Century AD, Dimensions: 11.7" (29.7cm) high, Collection: Near Eastern Art, Style: Slip Painted Afrasiyab or Nishapur, Medium: Earthenware, Condition: Extra Fine. This beatiful piece of earthenware can best be described as a simple, elegant vase with a beautifully painted manuscript. It features a white slip with black slip decoration under a transparent glaze. There is no sign of a handle which may indicate this vase would likely have been used for cut flowers as seen in manuscript paintings of later periods. This piece of earthenware features a traditional style of painting in thick coloured slips. This style was limited to Iran and Eastern Iran from the 10th to 11th Century AD.
