This item has been SOLD. A classic style Baule maternity sculpture depicting the community ideal of beauty, nobility and motherhood. The elaborate hair style, scarification and jewelry all suggest to the African viewer that this is a person of importance, one who does not work in the fields. She also is young and carrying a child, suggesting fertility, an important quality in Tribal life. This carving carefully adheres to the traditional standards of the community and is a carving on what appears to be an old piece of ivory. The sculpture itself is probably 30 to 40 years old. Height 14", diameter of the base 3.25".
