Early Islamic Glass Vase - AMD.109, Origin: Syria, Circa: 600 AD to 800 AD, Dimensions: 3.1" (7.9cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Blown/Applied Decoration, Medium: Glass. This magnificent globular vase has a short flaring neck and a fairly regular spherical body. The applied decoration is distinctive for its main decorative motif, an irregular circle with small 'tear-drop' like projections. This is relatively rare amongst vessels of this type, the production of which was concentrated in the Syrian region during the early Islamic period. A wide thread has been applied around the upper part of the body and pincered to create a riblike effect in relief. Although the exact purpose of this vessel is unknown it was most likely used to store precious liquids such as perfume. Over the centuries it has acquired an opaque pearly-white patina which adds to its charm.
