Orphaned at the age of ten, P.Aulius Hadrianus was placed under the care of guardians, including the future emperor Trajan. He embarked upon a military career when he was about twenty-four and married Trajan's grand- niece Sabina. Shortly before the emperor's death he was formally adopted, which made transition to power smooth. Widely admired, Hadrian set to work strengthening the empire, including building a vast wall from Tyne to Solway in Britain. Hadrian loved to travel, visiting many of the provinces with his wife and close friend Antinous. His passion for architecture was profound, resulting in the building of an immense imperial residence, the remains of which can still be seen today. These brilliant coins show Hadrian facing right, bearded and wearing a laurel wreath. He is portrayed as being very handsome, noble and strong; characteristics we would expect from such a popular and enlightened emperor. In their gold settings these coins are accessories worthy of nobility. - (FJ.6483)
