Classic Greek Attic Red and black decorated vase or ewer with a Nemeian Lion on the side. Stylized but still a fine quality decoration. This is probably representative of the Nemean Lion that Hercules had to hunt. Initially, Hercules was required to complete ten labors, not twelve. King Eurystheus decided Hercules'' first task would be to bring him the skin of an invulnerable lion which terrorized the hills around Nemea When Hercules got to Nemea and began tracking the terrible lion, he soon discovered his arrows were useless against the beast. Hercules picked up his club and went after the lion. Following it to a cave which had two entrances, Hercules blocked one of the doorways, then approached the fierce lion through the other. Grasping the lion in his mighty arms, and ignoring its powerful claws, he held it tightly until he''d choked it to death. In very good overall condition. Some paint loss and a minor chip on the rim. Stands 4'' tall and is circa 300 BC. Status: For Sale Reference#: 525_2544 Condition: vg minor chip Year: 300BC « Less

The polychrome on this sculpture is remarkably well preserved. The seated woman is dressed in a white himation that wraps around her body and over her head. She wears large red disk earrings and a pale blue beaded necklace. Her face is highlighted in pale pink hues while her lips are the same bold red of her earrings and the fruit she holds in her left hand, most likely a pomegranate. Black delineates her eyes and eyebrows as well as her curly hair. The woman’s right hand is placed at her breast in a soft, human gesture of concern. Placed upon her head is a polos, a cylindrical crown associated with fertility goddesses. Who this statue represents remains a mystery, yet the beauty of the woman and of the artistry of the work remain intact. - (PF.5557) « Less

This elegant shaped stirrup vessel is of a type often associated with ancient Mycenae on the Greek mainland. As there was thriving trade during the Late Bronze Age between the various cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, it is very possible that the jar originated there and traveled to ancient Palestine filled with precious oil or wine. Graceful in form, with bold yet simple decoration, it reminds us of mankind's age-old desire to surround himself with a beauty that outshines mere function. Whose hands might have held it so long ago we can only guess, yet the connection is a direct one between our age and theirs. - (P.2338)

Publius Septimius Geta was Roman emperor from 209 to 212, jointly with his father, Septimius Severus (reigned 193-211), and his brother, Caracalla (reigned 198-217). The younger son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, he was given the title “Caesar†in 198, when the title “Augustus†was bestowed upon his elder brother Caracalla, effectively sharing command with their father. In 209, Geta was himself made an Augustus, joining the ranks of his father and brother. The furious rivalry that developed between the brothers remained concealed from public view as long as their father lived; but after Severus' death at Eboracum (modern York, England) in February 211, the brothers formed separate military factions. Civil war threatened until February 212, when Caracalla had Geta murdered in their mother's arms in her apartment at the imperial palace.
How many hands have touched a coin in your pocket or purse? What eras and lands have the coin traversed on its journey into our possession? As we reach into our pockets to pull out some change, we rarely hesitate to think of who might have touched the coin before us, or where the coin will venture to after it leaves our hands. More than money, coins are a symbol of the state that struck them, of a specific time and location, whether contemporary currencies or artifacts of a long forgotten empire. This stunning hand-struck coin reveals an expertise of craftsmanship and intricate sculptural detail that is often lacking in contemporary machine-made currencies. This ancient coin is a memorial to an emperor’s brief reign passed from the hands of civilization to civilization, from generation to generation that still appears as vibrant today as the day it was struck. - (C.8410) « Less
