The Buddhist industry producing images for worship in Kashmir and Afghanistan in early medieval times seems to have had a marked effect on the taste of Islamic patrons of the day. In 10th and 11th century Central Asia, large numbers of animals or birds were produced, designed to function as vessels in their own right, or as decorative elements on larger objects.
