an unsually fine bronze sculpture of Spinario, the legendary "Boy with the Thorn in his Foot." It was cast around 1900 by the art sculpture foundry, H. Gladenbeck & Sohn, of Berlin, Germany. He is listed in Harold Berman's book on bronze sculptures and founders, 1800-1930, and is famous for his high quality detailed renditions of classic works. This is not a typically small bronze, but of substantial size. The dimensions are approximately 12 1/2" high, 5" wide at the base, and 9 1/4" long at the base. It is very heavy, weighing nearly 20 lbs.Footnote: The Gladenbeck foundry was founded by Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck in 1851 and was run by various family members and shareholders until the early years of the 20th century. In 1857 the company relocated to Berlin, and in 1888 became Aktien-Gesellschaft H. Gladenbeck und Sohn; directed by Hermann Gladenbeck and sons Oskar and Alfred.
