Large and heavy Shou Shan yellow stone carving featuring the emperor with lance in right hand leading followers. Below, 2 Chinese sampans or junks are depicted on a stormy sea. The reverse side represents an ancient pine tree in the center and a castle in a mountainous area. The Shou Shan soapstone carvings originate from the village of Shou Shan in Fujian Province and are very much prized by the Chinese people. The characters are auspicious as Shou character represents longevity and Shan is translated as mountain, place of retreat and meditation. In addition, Fu character from Fujian is translated as good luck. This carving is very heavy and weighs in excess of 10 lb. and measures 10" X 10.5" (26 X 27 cm.). Width: 2.5" (6.5 cm.).
