Tongan Apa’apai club entirely carved with all over repeating panels and rows of incised geometric design. This piece has two glyphs located towards the handle including a stylised bird and a human figure with outstretched arms with each arm incorporating a frigate bird. A further glyph is located centrally, however what this represents is unclear. At the base of the handle is the remnant of the suspension element that has broken through. Overall the carving on this club is of outstanding quality and this must have been owned by someone of high status. This piece has a very dark reddish brown patina and would date to the 18th century or very early 19th century. Measures 67cm long.
