SOLD Authentic antique 17th-19th century African Benin Bronze ancestral altar Bell from Nigeria, Cast in the form of a truncated, four-sided pyramid of rectangular shape, with sides sloping inward to the flat top with two pierced holes for suspension of the clapper.
The bell is surmounted with two strap-like handles. The sides are adorned with faces of inverted triangle shape with long narrow noses and protruding chins, these features make them look more Caucasian European rather than African. Â
Each edge is highlighted by a rope patterned string with small knobs at all corners. Â
CONDITION: The bell is in its original condition with beautiful natural dark patina. Missing clapper, the rusty iron spots in the interior of the bell indicate that the clapper was made of iron, which corroded and disintegrated over time.
