A fine old, Baba or Baba Takwa helmet mask that shows the effect of use and age. Some traces of the pigment appled to the mud and resin surface of the cheeks remains. The same is true of the cassowary feather crown. The basketry helmet itself is in good shape for the years of use and the ears are original. The Baba has several roles in Abelam practice. Usually noted for its association with the bush spirits called Wale, it is used in the early phases of the cycle of initiation ceremonies. The pig like Baba is also said to help the souls of the deceased find their way to the spirit world. A good addition to any New Guinea Collection. Mid 20th Century. Size: Hieght: 13.5", Diameter 9.5" front to back depth 11.5"
