Description: A Seal from the Duke of Burgundy known as "John the Fearless" (1371-1419) Stamps such as this were used when nobility signed charters deeds and other documents. Often stamps of this size were used to create wax seals that were suspended from the documents. While reminants of wax seals often still accompany documents from the middle ages the original brass stamps such as this one are exceedingly unusual and rarely come up for sale on the open market.
Provenance: Ex collection Paris France
Additional Information: Stamps such as these were the origin of the phrase "Seal of approval"
