Antique, late 16th - early 17th Century, European Horseman's war Axe, possibly German, or Italian. The hand forge steel head, with angular cutting blade, and slightly curved cutting edge with tapering beak-shaped rear-fluke of flattened square section, mounted on the hardwood haft circular section with a mushroom shaped pommel.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length; 41 cm (16 1/8 in), length of the head; 16 cm (6 1/4 in).
CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage, surface of the head slightly pitted, the wooden haft, loose, due to shrinkage of the wood. The wooden haft is a later replacement, the original haft was much longer than the present one. Free of any repairs or restoration.
