A powerful little figure is this Buddhist lion (karashishi, foo dog) carved from rare rhinoceros horn. He smiles beneficently from his crouched position, his tail curled behind him. Excellent condition, no signature. Late Edo or early Meiji Period, circa 1850. Approximately 2-1/4 inches long by 1-1/8 inches by one inch high.
