A sensational 8-panel Chinese Coromandel Screen.
The main theme of the screen on six panels plus 2 panels with classic Chinese decorative motifs and objets d'art.
The main theme of the screen is a scene of the summer palace. On the top of the first two panels from the left, there is a cartouche with the title theme of the screen. '府王乃易洽', 'The Monarch's mansion is an amiable, easy place to converse'.
Underneath this cartouche, the Monarch is seated in an impressive pavilion, surrounded by servants and consultants, while a member of his staff ushers a delegation for an audience with him.
On either side of the pavilion, two armed guards watch another staff member, at the pavilion's steps, as he guides a guest towards the Monarch.
To the right of the pavilion, a group of carefree children are playing, watched by members of the household staff.
On the lower part, two sentries flank the entrance of the mansion. On the left, watchmen are blowing their horns, signalling new guests have arrived.
On the right, the three guards watch carefully the group of priests or monks who are met at the gate by another two staff members. On this sentry, a huge banner flutters, bearing the Commander-in-Chief character, notifying everybody that the Monarch is in residence.
The far right panel depicts the idyllic of the mansion. Away from the formal activity, among lush vegetation and a peaceful lake, guests or members of the imperial family are enjoying their day.
The reverse of the screen is full of a very nice rendition of bamboo plants.
Over the years, the screen has acquired a magnificent patina ranging from a fiery to a mellow, matte gold, depending on the source of light.
Softwood with multiple layers of lacquer. The design hand carved in both low and high relief and very skilfully painted.
Late Qing period, circa 1890-1910.
